Patent Analytics team is a key function in Nokia Technology which is responsible for providing and further developing advanced analytics to support the management of our world-leading patent portfolio. As a leading IPR licensing business, we operate in a uniquely data-rich environment, where we can leverage droves of data on customers (e.g., market and company data), competitors (e.g., patent and company data), technologies (e.g., patent and standardization data), and business operations (e.g., financial and operational data) to guide our strategy development and decision making.


What you will learn and contribute to

Patent Analytics team is looking for a junior Data Scientist to leverage fit-for-purpose quantitative methods (e.g., statistics, machine learning, econometrics, optimization, simulation, etc.) to deliver insights into competitor patenting and portfolio management behaviours, solve strategic business problems, and support analytical strategy development and decision making. If you have a strong background in advanced quantitative methods, are passionate about solving complex business problems, and welcome a demanding, global, and fast-paced working environment, you might just be the perfect addition to our exceptional team.

As part of our team, you will:

  • Deliver insight into the composition and development of our competitive patent landscape, competitor patenting and portfolio management behaviours
  • Develop and validate new metrics and methods for quantifying and comparing patent portfolios
  • Leverages economic theory and fit-for-purpose econometric methods to model and quantify the value created by our technologies in different markets and use cases

Your skills and experience

You have:

  • M.Sc. (Research Track) or Ph.D. in Economics, or an equivalent economics skillset (Ph.D. level core courses in microeconomics and econometrics required)
  • Proven track-record in creating business relevant insights using patent and ETSI disclosure data in cellular SEP analytics and/or portfolio management context, as well as a good understanding of patenting processes, patent data, and data science tools (proven experience in using R, Python, and the Azure Databricks environment required)
  • Proven track-record in economic modeling and applied econometrics to support FRAND valuation and pricing in the context of cellular SEP licensing and litigation

It would be nice if you also had:

  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality, production-ready code (readable, well-tested, with well-designed APIs)
  • Strong business acumen and proven capabilities in applying quantitative methods (e.g. statistics, machine learning, econometrics, simulation, optimization, etc.) to solve complex problems
  • Strong command of statistical theory and practice (e.g. sampling theory, stochastic processes, statistical forecasting, frequentist and Bayesian statistical inference, hypothesis testing, etc.)
  • Experience from working with different data types, formats, architectures, and services
  • Proven track-record of delivering excellent results in demanding project environments
  • Ability to synthesize and summarize key findings in ways that are easy to communicate
  • Strategic thinker with a strong command of analytical problem solving
  • Self-starter with the ability and drive to deliver quality deliverables on tight deadlines
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to tailor communication to different audiences
  • Excellent written and communication skills in English
